3 Ways to Prepare Your Air Conditioner Early in the Season
Spring has just begun, and in our part of Texas, that means temperatures are already into the 80°s. Still, you might not have used your air conditioner too often so far (since this is the best weather we’ll see in months), and it only has to run for short periods of time right now anyway.
Before temperatures really start to pick up, be sure you do these three things. It’s better to take preventative measures than to deal with a sudden AC breakdown in the middle of summer, when AC problems could seem like a disaster!
1. Change the Air Filter
We say this time and time again, but we think it cannot be overstated! Changing the air filter is the least you can do for your air conditioner—and it’s easy! Simply stock up on the right size of filter, line up the arrows in the right direction, and you’re good to go.
Still, we hear a lot of misconceptions about why, exactly, changing the air filter is so important. We’ve heard people say, “Oh, but my air quality is fine,” or “We don’t have any allergies.” But allergen control is only a sub-feature of your filter.
Air filters block particles from damaging the air conditioner’s fan and motor. But a dirty filter can cause damage as well. All that buildup in a filter over time can block airflow, leading to…
- An increase in cooling time, and reduced comfort.
- Higher energy bills, as the fan has to work harder.
- Greater wear and tear and a higher chance of repairs.
Change your air filter early in the season and every month or 2 to follow!
2. Check Your Thermostat
We’ve gotten calls from many homeowners in the past who assumed their systems were broken, when really, the thermostat just needed adjustment. Before the season is in full swing, make sure your thermostat is on and in cooling mode. “Fan only” mode (or similar wording) means that only the fan will run, not the parts responsible for refrigeration, so you won’t actually feel cool.
We also recommend programming your thermostat for savings during peak hours and when you are away from home. If you’re not satisfied with the programming options your thermostat provides you, it may be time for an upgrade. Smart thermostats allow you to make changes from your smart phone, no matter where you are!
3. Schedule AC Maintenance
Finally, be sure to schedule air conditioning maintenance early in the season. This service is especially important in our area, where it helps you to prevent the AC system from becoming overworked on the hottest day. It can also lower your bills and, completed annually, extend the lifespan of your air conditioner! The steps involved are not things you should try on your own.
- Cleaning Coils
- Testing Voltage/Amp Draw
- Tightening Connections
- Adjusting Fan Belts
- Lubricating Moving Parts
- And Much More
Be sure to contact an experienced, qualified AC specialist for this service early in the spring.
